INFO FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
Helpful Information for EAAO Students and Families
Here is some information that you can use to set your child / yourself up for success during your time at EASO:
Set Up Routines
Physical exercise that gets your and/or your child’s heart rate up for 20 minutes or more. We cannot always make this happen but aim for it. We know from research that this amount of exercise increases the level of a protein, called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain and enhances neuroplasticity. Exercise can also relieve stress, improve sleep, develop overall health, support sensory integration, and it can be fun!
Bedtime routines that get everyone their much-needed rest. This varies from person to person, but take some time to make a plan, and give yourself a few weeks to try it out. SleepAdvisor.org has lots of helpful information for all stages of life and family dynamics.
Think about food and some easy, healthy snacks and lunch options that will fuel you and/or your child. Some commonalities to aim for across all healthy diets are foods that are low in refined sugars, low in refined carbs, drinking lots of water, and making sure to include foods that are enjoyable so that you and/or your children will actually eat them.
Growth Mindset Messages
Surround yourselves in growth mindset messages in this start of the year, and whenever you all need a boost during the year. Growth mindset is the belief that you can improve. If this wording is new to you, please watch Carol Dweck’s TED talk on the research that she pioneered and promoted in this area. For our new students, they may not be used to how dedicated work in the Arrowsmith Program can yield such incredible results, because in previous school experiences hard work did not get them far. You may need to convince them that it is possible!
Watch growth mindset movies together. Here is a great list from Big Life Journal.
Read, or read out loud, stories about growth mindset. Here is a list of young-adult fiction, and a list pictures books that help the reader to take this mindset on.
Even video games can be used to talk about growth mindset! If you are a gamer, or your child is, this article is for you! Or watch this video about the gamification of learning, and how to have a growth mindset, check out this TED Talk by YouTube star Mark Rober.
Agreements About Tech Use for Children
Create “device” agreements in your family, and if you have these already in place, make sure that they are still current for your child’s age and needs. When can cell phones be used, and when can’t they? Where do they get plugged in at the end of the day? How much video game or YouTube or social media time per day? What are appropriate responses if the agreements are broken? We have an example of one in our Parent and Student Handbook.
Parental Controls for Children
Set up parental controls for your devices or filters for your router that align with your family values. There are many ways to approach this depending on the kinds of devices in your home, the brand, and how tech savvy you are.
